In Florida, becoming a licensed Certified General Contractor (CGC) is a process that ensures the highest standards of safety, reliability, and professionalism within the construction industry. The state mandates specific requirements for licensure to protect public welfare and ensure that construction projects are carried out competently. To obtain a CGC license, applicants must demonstrate a combination of education and experience, typically involving four years of work under a licensed contractor, with at least one year in a supervisory role or substitute three years of this experience with a four- year college degree in comparable disciplines. Additionally, all applicants are required to pass all three of the state-issued contractor exams to further validate their expertise. Certified licenses are statewide, allowing contractors to work anywhere in any county in Florida.
The journey to becoming a CGC in Florida is a testament to an individual's dedication to their craft, adherence to stringent safety protocols, and commitment to continuous learning. It is a rigorous path but rewards every CGC with the privilege of shaping Florida's built environment and infrastructure development. And to keep it, every two years each CGC must complete 14 hours of approved continuing education courses to renew their license.
This entire process is regulated and monitored by The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
